You Can Be Cool, Just Being YouPosted March 26th, 2012 At 4:45 pm By MTV ASIA
This past week, I was totally impressed by Jessie J when she visited Singapore on the last stop of her Asian/Australian Tour. The show at the Singapore Indoor Stadium was well attended by many adoring, extremely energetic fans. We interviewed her before the show and she was very down to earth, telling us which artists inspire her and the videos that she enjoys watching over and over again. Her Brit accent was infectiously charming and it was difficult not to keep noticing her flawless skin.
However, underneath all that exterior, was a mighty heart – A real worker and a fighter. She has always been very outspoken about her right to be an individual and for others to embrace an overall acceptance of people living around us. She manages to go beyond just preaching it and displays it for all to see on-stage.
With only her band, a microphone and her pink dress, she was all the glitter that the concert ever needed. There were no high- priced gimmicks, video walls, pyro technics, dance routines or waterfalls. It was just her singing her songs and her really speaking her crowd. She talked about what she was going through that day and how close she had become to her band mates through all the travel of the tour. Her heartfelt gratitude to the audience throughout the set felt so sincere because she explained why she was so thankful with her last few songs. She brought two young girls, who were holding up “Can I sing with you?” signs, up on stage to sing with her and gave them an experience they would never forget. Jessie J is a great example and reminder to all the fans that artists actually do pay attention to them!
Jessie ended her show with such a nice gesture: Basically forcing her crew and entourage to come up on stage with her and contribute with the last song (one of my faves) ‘Domino’. Some of them were obviously uneasy but she did not give up and had most of them singing and enjoying themselves in the end.
I’ve had the privilege of watching hundreds of live shows and have never seen anyone pull something like that off the way she did. And to think she’s still so young and just beginning to flex her creative muscles.
You really can be cool just being you.
