My awkward moment happened when I was 16. I was a nerdy, bespectacled clueless girl and had decided to join my school’s annual marathon. I was not much of a sports person; I rarely exercised, what more ran for miles on end! Truth be told, I joined upon finding out that this cute boy whom I had a serious crush on was taking part. I still remember clearly that on that faithful morning, I nervously got dressed in my newly bought sports wear and perched my geeky glasses firmly over my nose. Upon arriving at the event venue, my heart skipped a beat when I bumped into him and I almost fainted when he surprisingly accepted my suggestion to run together! It was scorching hot that morning and I started to sweat profusely.Barely mid-way into the marathon, I felt my glasses slowly but surely slipping down my nose bridge. I looked ridiculously stupid, almost like an old granny! But each time, I regained my composure, propped my glasses back on and continued running. Then came the embarrassing, awkward moment. At one point, I was running so hard to catch up with him that my sweaty nose bridge could not support my glasses any longer. So my glasses dropped to the ground and got lost amongst the crowd of runners. Shocked, I turned around just in time to hear a loud cracking sound and I knew that my glasses had been crushed. I refused to quit the race as it was obviously my golden opportunity to get acquainted with the boy. Unfortunately for him, my poor eyesight left me with no choice but to cling onto his arm throughout the remaining journey. To make matters worse, I even stumbled and fell a few times. He helped me back on my feet and was incredibly patient but I could see he was embarrassed and I was unattractively clumsy, totally not girlfriend material. I blew my chances! Needless to say, the awkward and embarrassing incident was the joke and talk of the school for quite some time. I kept my distance from him ever since! – Tong Hiew Wei, Malaysia
