• Men … Wearing Bras?Posted November 3rd, 2009 At 2:29 pm By MTV ASIA

I know, that is a totally tabloidy title, but that was all I could think about after reading this article on London Times today.

Apparently there are ‘Girly Men’ or ‘Herbivorous Men’ (um – presumably ‘cos macho, butch men are more..carnivorous?) running around in Japan, wearing bras, skirts and frilly pink tops.

And these men are not homosexual by the way. And it’s not transvetism or cross-dressing, ‘cos there seems to be no sexual fetish involved. Apparently, they:

have no interest in fast cars, career success, designer labels and trophy women. Instead, they hold down humble jobs, cultivate women as friends rather than conquests and spend their free time shopping at small boutiques and pursuing in Japan what is regarded as a profoundly feminine pastime: eating cakes.

Actually, they are starting to sound like really good friends to have. We’ll have plenty of common interests, for example, my profoundly feminine pastime of eating cakes.

But wait – back to the Men Bras. Please click on over to WishRoom.net to see their wonderful collection of men bras – this is just mind boggling. What exactly do they need to support? Plus, Japanese men tend to be so skinny. No moobs to speak of.

He's neither Japanese, nor girly - he's actually joining a protest for "National Go Topless Day" in honor of Women's Equality Day to promote the idea women have the same constitutional right to be bare chested in public places as men...Um right. I just thought this post badly needed a visual, and Getty was obliging as usual. MARK RALSTON/AFP/Getty Images

    There’s more:

This week, Mr Yamaguchi will launch his latest collection of skirts and lacy tops, some of them pink, and all aimed at men.

I’m really all for self expression. I’m just not comfortable with sharing my clothes and knickers with my boyfriend.

David Beckham and his penchant for Victoria’s lacy undies are one thing.

But wearing bras? I think it will take a really open-minded, forward-thinking lady to accept such a thing. Hi Mum, I’m out bra-shopping with my boyfriend – he needs a new set – do you need anything for yourself?

Or, I can’t talk now, I’m indulging in my profoundly feminine pastime of eating cakes with my boyfriend.

But then again – it’s Japan. And you know, I think practically anything goes in Japan. It must be the sashimi or something.

Metro men are perfectly fine – for example:

I can’t think of a single reason why men can’t wear skirts, actually.

Other than hairy, less attractive legs, possibly? Though I’m pretty sure most of our Asian societies will still probably raise an eyebrow at defiantly feminine boys wearing skirts.

Though if you do have this interest, there’s a forum where men gather to discuss their love of skirt-wearing.

But I am very firmly drawing the line at bras, simply because IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE.
